Welcome to the Meyer Center - Come Inside

The Meyer Center for Special Children was founded in 1954 by Dr. Leslie Meyer, known as a champion for children with disabilities. It was a very different time. Long before the law guaranteed access, children with disabilities were excluded from public schools.

Dr. Meyer believed they deserved something more. That belief became the Meyer Center.

A lot has changed in 70 years. Walk through the doors on any given morning, and you’ll see his vision in action!

You’ll see backpacks hanging in the hallway and classrooms waiting for little feet to arrive. You’ll hear circle time songs, see teachers on the floor with students, watch therapists at work through play, and witness plenty of smiles. No two children experience success in the same way. For one child, success might mean taking an independent step. For another, it might be touching a picture to communicate their needs. It could be holding a crayon, joining the group during circle time, or tasting a specific food for the first time.

Some moments are big and obvious, others might go unnoticed if you don’t know to look for them. We want you to see them. That’s what this blog is about.

Moving forward, we’re inviting you inside the Meyer Center - not to tell you what we do, but to introduce you to the people and students who make this place so special. We’ll step inside classrooms, follow therapists, and introduce you to teachers, staff members and families. We’ll celebrate milestones and share stories from our history, allowing you to see what seven decades of serving children with disabilities looks like today.

The story of the Meyer Center isn’t a story of building a program. It’s a story of people.
