May 12, 2010Meyer Center Receives Grant from Greenville Women's GivingThe Meyer Center is honored to have been selected by the members of Greenville Women Giving as a grant recipient. A gift of $49,290 was made at the group’s annual meeting on May 12th at the The Peace Center's Gunter Theatre. Seven other Upstate non-profit agencies received funding. Since its beginning in 1954, the Meyer Center has never turned away any child due to a family’s inability to pay for services, but it has become increasingly difficult to meet the growing requirement for financial aid. This generous gift will provide much-needed scholarship funding. Established in 2006, Greenville Women Giving was founded on the idea that women, informed about philanthropy and about needs in their community can collectively make a real difference. This is accomplished by grants in areas of identified community need. GWG's 350 members pool their money to collectively give to Greenville charities. Dedication to helping local charities is at the heart of Greenville Women Giving, according to Janet Sumner, chair of GWG's membership committee. "GWG wants to give one-time grants that will have a long-term, lasting effect," she said. Greenville Women Giving is very serious about how they give their money." With the grants awarded this year, the group's cumulative giving to the Greenville community exceeded $1 million. Louise Anthony, Meyer Center Executive Director, stated, "We salute GWG for the difference they are making in the Upstate, and we are especially grateful for their gift to the Meyer Center. It will have far-reaching impact in the lives of the children we serve."Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) , the Meyer Center provides intensive speech, occupational and physical therapy integrated with preschool education for children with physical disabilities, aged 0-6. The organization is a United Way agency, DSS-licensed childcare facility, Medicaid rehabilitation facilty, and Greenville County Charter preschool for children with disabilities ages 3-6 years.
