In 1954 long before the phrase “early intervention” was coined, Dr. Leslie Meyer founded the Meyer Center. It was a time when society saw only limitations for children with disabilities, but Dr. Meyer saw potential; so when he heard of a school for special-needs children in Boston, he bought a plane ticket. He returned home convinced that Upstate South Carolina could have such a school, and the result was the establishment of the Meyer Center.
Today, the Meyer Center’s Mission, Vision, Values and Goals continue to be based on Dr. Meyer’s belief that intensive education and therapy provided at the earliest possible age, gives each child with a disability the best chance to succeed. Growing up on a Nebraska farm, Dr. Meyer learned that you should “never take anything from your community without giving back something of equal value.” He lived by this principle and worked selflessly throughout his life guiding and protecting children who couldn’t help themselves. He knew that giving any child the opportunity to learn would create a better future for all of us.
